The United Nations (UN) was formed to replace the League of Nations. The UN was established in 1945, after World War II, and aimed to maintain international peace and security, as well as achieve cooperation among nations on economic, social, and humanitarian issues. The League of Nations, which had been founded in 1919 after World War I, was seen as ineffective in preventing conflict, particularly in the face of aggression by Italy, Japan, and Germany in the 1930s. The UN inherited several of the League's agencies and organizations, and the League formally dissolved in 1946, according to Britannica.
