Up a creek with an ineffective paddle

This Canadian man was not without a paddle, but he still wasn’t in a great situation.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the Northwest Territories says that it responded to a report of an intoxicated individual who had stolen a kayak. The suspect then took the kayak out into a local lake alongside a snow shovel, which he tried to use as a paddle.

As much as that might’ve made sense to the man in his state, the snow shovel did not really work as a paddle, and he fell into the lake after capsizing the kayak. The man was pulled by officers to shore and was arrested.

“Under the Criminal Code, a ‘vessel’ isn’t limited to motorized boats,” says Cpl. Kevin Kim. “Self propelled watercraft like canoes and kayaks are included. Operating any of these while impaired puts everyone at risk.”
