7/16 Wasco County Commissioners meeting

The Wasco County Commissioners met yesterday.  They started the meeting with some routine business approving items on the Consent Agenda and listened to a few staff reports.

During public comments, Dennis James was making the Commissioners aware that the road going to the Wasco County Landfill is in bad shape and something needs to change before anyone gets into an accident or worse yet, dies on that road.

That lead the Commission Chair, Scott Hege to respond:

“We have been working on it, like I said, Arthur and I, and we, the end discussion I think of what Arthur Smith and I had with ODOT was ODOT was going to go back and see if they could maybe start getting some preliminary design stuff on some ideas.”

For now, the County will reach out to all that would be involved and see if they can get them all together for a meeting and see if they could come up with some solutions.

Krystyna Wolniakowski, Executive Director of the Columbia River Gorge Commission gave a report to the Commissioners on what is happening with the Gorge Commission.

She told Commissioners that the Gorge Commission will be helping in the Rowena Fire Recovery:

“We have been working on it, like I said, Arthur and I, and we, the end discussion I think of what Arthur and I had with ODOT was ODOT was going to go back and see if they could maybe start getting some preliminary design stuff on some ideas.”

She also talked about temporary housing:

“I heard testimony about wondering whether people could live in trailers temporarily and we do allow that. So, I know that there was some fear that we wouldn’t allow that in the national scenic area, but we do, and especially in this particular case. If they can actually get back onto their property safely and they’ve got an RV that they can live out of, you know, why not.”

Krystyna added one more thing:

“And another concern that I’ve heard about is that the Gorge commission doesn’t allow metal roofs and that’s just not true. We’ve always allowed metal roofs, but some ordinances and counties have not allowed metal roofs. But the, one of the reasons why there’s a concern about metal roofs is because their reflectivity. And so we just say, yeah you can have a metal roof, just make sure that it’s dark.”

That’s a look at yesterday’s Wasco County Commissioners meeting.
