Survey says 70% of dog owners care about their pet’s health more than their own

It’s no secret dog owners love their furry companions, but a new survey shows just how dedicated they are: 7 in 10 look after their pet’s health and happiness more than their own.

The survey of 2,000 dog owners was conducted by the U.K. pet food brand Butternut Box and excerpted by the Press Express.

The poll found 73% of dog owners make sure their pooches get more exercise than they do.

What’s more, the dog owners say if they had a medical issue, they’d take as many as eight days to see a doctor — but they’d only take three to call a vet if something was wrong with their dog.

For the record, Forbes says “essential” dog expenses — which don’t include that hot dog costume — cost an average of $1,533 annually.

Compared to cat owners, those with man’s best friend at home spend the most on vet care, an average of $367 per year, plus $339 on food and nearly $100 a year on grooming.

While all this may seem extreme, chances are, you get it. Forbes Advisor data shows 65.1 million U.S. households own a dog.
