A New Jersey woman is fighting a lawsuit to keep her emotional support chickens.
According to NJ.com, Lori Smith, of Gloucester County, has been sued by her homeowners association to get rid of the five birds she keeps on her property, which she says help her with panic and anxiety attacks and post- traumatic stress.
The association first brought a lawsuit against Smith and her husband a year ago, which ruled against her and ordered a $50 fine for every day the chickens remained in her home. The couple decided to keep them and have been paying $50 each day with the help of a crowdfunding campaign set up by Smith’s mother.
They’ve also filed a counterclaim alleging discrimination by the association and causing emotional distress.
Given the price of eggs, maybe Smith could claim the chickens for financial support, too.
