Upcoming projects will have an impact on Gorge traffic

Travelers on I-84 and the Historic Columbia River Highway should be aware of the traffic impacts related to upcoming road projects, maintenance and special events in the coming weeks.

I-84 barrier repair

This week, crews will repair barrier along I-84 that was damaged in crashes. Travelers should expect the left lane of I-84 east and west to be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday near Corbett and Friday near Bridal Veil.

Increased traffic on Historic Highway

On Sunday, Sept. 19, a relay event will bring teams of runners to the Historic Highway. Runners will begin at Viento State Park, use the frontage roads and Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail to head west to Ainsworth State Park. From there, runners will continue on the Historic Columbia River Highway to Troutdale and into the Portland metro area.

Travelers should be aware of the event, watch for runners and traffic control devices, and be prepared for delays on the Historic Highway between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Rolling slowdowns occur this fall for the Mitchell Point Tunnel

Efforts are underway to build the Mitchell Point Tunnel as part of the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail. This fall, crews will start forming the tunnel with drilling and rock blasting.

During rock blasting, rolling slowdowns on I-84 may be used to create 20-minute windows where there is no traffic. Rolling slowdowns can occur Tuesday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This work is planned to begin in late September. Visit the project website or check TripCheck.com for schedule updates.

Travel the Gorge frequently?

Over the next several years, we have many construction projects planned on Interstate 84 between Interstate 205 and Hood River, and on the Historic Columbia River Highway between Troutdale and Hood River.

Each project brings benefits to residents, businesses and visitors by increasing safety, extending the lifespan of the highways or completing a gap in walking and biking infrastructure.

View more information about upcoming work and confirm you are set to receive project updates through email.

All of these projects align with our efforts to maintain a modern, safe and reliable transportation system as spelled out in our Strategic Action Plan.
