Only 26 percent of eligible Wasco County voters turned out for yesterday’s special district elections. Though many offices only had one ante on the ballot, there were several contested races. The tightest of those was for Port of The Dalles director between Marcus Swift and John Willer. Final unofficial results posted on the stat’s election website show willer leading Swift by just 38 votes out of 3504 votes cast. That is less than the one-fifth of one percent required by the state for an automatic recount. In the other port office on the ballot, Robert Wallace defeated Jack Hays with just shy of 60 percent of the vote.
Northern Wasco County Parks and Recreation District board elections one of only two three-way races on the ballot. In that contest, Rachel Carter took the lead with more than 45 percent of the vote to Michael Held’s 40 percent and Justin Brock’s 13 percent. In the other contested race for the district, Annette Byers had 71 percent over Curtis Eggers with 28 percent.
The other three-way race was for the Mosier Fire District board. Barbara Ayers came away with 68 percent against 119 percent for Jim Appleton And 13 percent for Peter Lawson.
There were several contested races for Th School District 21 board. For some 1 it was Rebecca Thistlewaithe over Mary Morhouse By 56 percent to 43 percent. In zone 4 it was John Nelson over Carla McQuade 63 percents to 34 percent. In zone 5 Brian Stevens over Holly Gove 65 to 34 percent. In South Wasco County School District it’s was Paul Koerschgen over Howard Fetz with 55 percent to 44 percent.
Posision 1 for Columbia Gorge Community College Board went to Nate Stice over Fred Polehn with 68 percent over 30 percent. And in the Columbia Gorge ESD it was Stacey Holeman with 58 percent over Holly Price with 42 percent.
