Olly the hedgehog has had a rough year. He was brought to an animal shelter in Devon, England, completely bald. He’s been dealing with an infection that caused him to lose every one of his 7000 spines. The shelter staff — shame on them — went so far as to joke that Olly looks like a rolled-up sock or a very large potato.
Insults aside, the staff partnered with local vets to give Olly full luxury treatment — complete with special hydrating baths, soothing creams and pain meds to help his skin heal.
They also took things to the next level by launching a charity campaign. They celebrated Olly and asked for donations, with the goal of raising 7000 British pounds — exactly one pound for every missing prickle. That’s about $9300 here in the U.S.
The money raised by the shelter — thanks to Olly’s recovery — will go a long way toward treating sick and injured hedgehogs that show up, with or without their prickles.
