Talk about an explosive piece of history. What started as a treasure hunt through World War II memorabilia turned into an emergency response when a Montana man bought a storage unit and found something that wasn’t meant for a collection.
Authorities in Broadwater County say a resident purchased the contents of a storage unit filled with World War II items and discovered a live grenade hidden among the memorabilia. Rather than call the police and let them come and deal with it, he decided to bring it over to the sheriff’s office.
The grenade had a toothpick where the clip should have been. Officials immediately shut down the area and called in a bomb squad to dispose of the grenade. The entire process took several hours before a unit safely transported the grenade to a transfer station where it was disposed. The sheriff’s office urged anyone who finds an explosive device to leave it alone where it is and call police. (KTVH-TV Helena, MT)
