Resident Evil easily topped the box office, opening with $60 million. The Zach Cregger-directed reboot more than doubled the franchise’s previous opening record of $26 million, set by Resident Evil: Afterlife in 2010. The film added $48.3 million internationally for a $108.3 million global debut.
Practical Magic 2 dropped to second with $12.2 million, bringing its domestic total to $50 million. Spider-Man: Brand New Day placed third with $6.5 million and has now earned $944.5 million domestically. The Odyssey followed with $4.9 million, while Coyote vs. Acme rounded out the Top 5 with $4.5 million.
