Rep. Gloria Mendoza leads House in honoring President’s Day

The Washington House took a brief pause on the floor Monday to mark President’s Day, adopting a resolution honoring past presidents and the ideals they upheld.

Grandview Republican Representative Gloria Mendoza led the chamber in honoring the accomplishments of presidents, from George Washington and Abraham Lincoln to leaders in more modern eras.

“For me, one president holds deeply personal place in my heart. President Ronald Reagan.”

Mendoza told colleagues Reagan’s story is tied to her own. Her father admired Reagan because he believed in the promise of America.

“I came to the United States from Mexico as a little girl. Like many immigrant families, mine came with hope and belief that hard work could lead to a better future.”

Mendoza said her father’s dream was for his children to grow up educated, working hard, and fully part of this nation. She urged the House to reflect on the character that defines that leadership.

“So today, I leave you with the only way to make change is to have courage. Courage even when you are the only one walking in that direction.”

House Resolution 4691 passed unanimously.
