Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), in a partnership with Wasco County Veteran
Services, will launch a series of refreshed “Welcome to Wasco County” signs featuring the new
byline “We Honor Veterans.” These signs will greet visitors and residents at seven of the
county’s nine gateway locations, symbolizing the community’s deep commitment to recognizing
and supporting its veterans.
The initiative transforms familiar entry points into powerful tributes, blending local pride with
gratitude for those who served. “This project isn’t just about signage—it’s a heartfelt
acknowledgment of the veterans who shape our county’s spirit, and drives all that we do,” said
Chelsea Perritt, Wasco County Veteran Service Officer. “Through this collaboration, we’re
creating lasting landmarks that remind everyone of the sacrifices made, the bonds that unite
us, and the legacies that outlive us all.”
The design and fabrication were a true team effort, led by ODOT’s dedicated Region 4 sign crew coordinator Dave Leppert, alongside District 9 sign crew members Dan Marcott and Jeff Heldstab,
District 10 sign crew member Dax Roth, and the Salem sign shop team—including lead Shawn
McKnight, and sign technicians Bruce Nelson, Randy Kleinschmit, and Jason Arredondo. These
professionals meticulously designed, fitted, shaped, and refined every detail to bring the vision
to life. What began as a technical endeavor evolved into a “labor of love,” forging a tight-knit
group united by personal connections to veterans—many of whom are veterans themselves or
have loved ones who served.
“This collaboration highlights the best of public service: creativity, camaraderie, and community
impact,” added Dave Leppert ODOT region 4 coordinator. “We’re thrilled to see these signs
stand as beacons of honor across Wasco County. We are proud to be a part of the legacy of
honoring veterans.”
The new signs will now be installed and visible at key entry points, enhancing the county’s
welcoming identity while promoting veteran appreciation year-round. For more information on
