While being able to get most things delivered to your home has certainly made life easier, there’s always a chance someone may snag that delivery before you get to enjoy it. And apparently that’s happening to a lot of people.
The email & SMS marketing platform Ominsend combined 2024 FBI data with a new survey to look at just how bad things have gotten when it comes to stolen deliveries, and found that one in three Americans have been the victim of porch pirates. In fact, in 2024 about 241 million packages were stolen, costing Americans an estimated $15.7 billion.
Not that the items stolen are that expensive. The average loss is about $65 per package, with 85% of them under $100. Still, that adds up for retailers, with refunds estimated to cost them about $6.5 billion.
Overall, about 30% of Americans have had packages stolen over the past year, but those numbers are higher for certain states. Both New York and Hawaii had the most victims, with 39% and 38% of households, respectively, having something stolen. States the least affected include Alabama (5%) and Kentucky (8%).
As for how often it happens, on average 1.9 packages were stolen per household nationwide, although that number jumps to 4.9 for New York and 4.6 for Wisconsin.
And when it comes to which packages are most susceptible to porch pirates, Amazon packages are the most likely nabbed, with data showing 72% of all packages stolen came from the online retailer, followed by UPS (31%), FedEx (30%) and USPS (29%).
