An eagle escaped death by the skin of its teeth. Or, rather, the skin of a fish.
According to The Guardian, Dr. Kimberly Ammann,of the Winged Freedom Raptor Hospital in Wisconsin, healed an American bald eagle suffering from a badly infected wound by applying a fish skin graft.
Upon finding the bird, named Kere, Ammann first thought she wouldn’t be able to save it. But through some research, she came across an Icelandic company that uses Atlantic cod skin grafts to treat human wounds. After getting in contact, the company sent her patches of sterilized, dehydrated and descaled fish skin.
The procedure was a success, and Kere was returned to the wild just ahead of the Fourth of July, which Ammann felt was a good way to celebrate Independence Day.
Eagles eat fish, and fish saves eagle. Sing it with us: it’s the circle, the circle of life!
