In a sign that Americans are increasingly nervous about the economy, The New York Federal Reserve’s latest poll of consumers, taken in July, shows Americans are looking for new jobs at a rate not seen since 2014.
The poll showed 28.4% of respondents said they’re looking for a new job, and 11.6% said they expect they’ll be working for someone new at some point soon.
The respondents are increasingly worried they’ll get laid off: The survey showed 4.4% expected to be unemployed at some point, which is up from 3.9% from the July 2023 poll.
That 4.4% figure is the highest recorded for the survey, which began in 2014.
The poll also revealed just 56.7% are satisfied with their salary, a drop of 3.2% since July 2023. More than 56% are satisfied with their nonwage benefits, down 8.6%, and just 44.2% say they’re happy with their prospects for a promotion at their current job — a drop of 9.3% from July 2023.
