Great news for Interstate 84 travelers in the Columbia River Gorge: All travel lanes in both directions of Interstate 84 have reopened at McCord Creek Bridge, just west of Bonneville Dam.
This marks a major milestone for the McCord Creek Bridge Replacement Project as crews continue to work on completion of the new eastbound bridge.
The most disruptive travel impacts are behind us, and the infamous dip in the road where vehicles transitioned onto the bridge has also been removed.
Through fall 2026, crews will continue rebuilding the center median to separate eastbound and westbound traffic. They will also be paving lanes further out from the bridge, reshaping the dirt and ditches around the westbound off-ramp, and restoring the Historic Highway State Trail section in the work zone to its pre-construction conditions.
Other work will also occur under the bridge without impacting traffic and includes removing several old bridge foundations, removing the work bridge and materials, and planting and seeding.
During this work, travelers should expect occasional temporary single lane closures on I-84.
The NE Frontage Road on-ramp to eastbound I-84 at the Elowah Falls Trailhead parking lot is closed throughout construction. Travelers accessing eastbound I-84 from NE Frontage Road must detour to the on-ramps at Ainsworth State Park at Exit 35.
The Historic Highway State Trail will be open to bicyclists and hikers between John B. Yeon and Toothrock Trailheads. The trail is anticipated to be restored to pre-construction conditions this fall.
