Staffing shortage at Goldendale Observatory

Story by Rodger Nichols for Gorge Country Media

Washington State Parks are closing any programming at the Goldendale Observatory, after spending $5.9 million for a complete makeover just six years ago.

An email from Jill Sprance-Carr, East Columbia Gorge Area Manager for Washington State Parks framed it as “a pause,” and said the decision was due to a staffing shortage.

“We are working on a plan to reinitiate programs, ” she wrote, “but at this point we don’t know when that will be.”

She also noted that the Observatory campus but not the building, will still be open for self-guided tours from 6:30 am to dusk daily.
