Detroit’s new statue will serve the public trust, protect the innocent and uphold the law.
According to the Detroit Metro Times, the Motor City has installed a sculpture of Robocop, the title character from the 1987 Paul Verhoeven film, which takes place in Detroit.
The idea for a Robocop statue first came from a viral social media post in 2011, which asked Detroit’s mayor if the city could build one akin to Philadelphia’s Rocky statue.
While the mayor at the time rejected the idea, efforts to get a statue approved continued through a crowdfunding campaign. Fifteen years later, Detroit’s Robocop statue is finally a reality.
