Alcaraz produces another major comeback to win French Open final in five-set thriller against Sinner

PARIS (AP) — Bad starts in Grand Slam finals are nothing new for Carlos Alcaraz and each time it’s happened he has won the tournament anyway. But not in such dramatic style as Sunday’s French Open final. The Spaniard rallied from two sets down and saved three match points to beat Jannik Sinner 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-4, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (10-2) for his fifth major title in as many finals. It was his second straight French Open title with a comeback, after trailing 2-1 in sets to Alexander Zverev in last year’s final and a third major title from behind following his five-set win against Novak Djokovic in the 2023 Wimbledon final. It was also the longest final in French Open history at 5 hours, 29 minutes.

Game 2: Thunder will try to tie up the NBA Finals, while Pacers will seek complete control of series

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma City guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will almost certainly reach a milestone on Sunday night. The reigning NBA MVP from the Thunder enters Game 2 of the NBA Finals against the Indiana Pacers just two points away from 3,000 for the season, including the regular season and playoffs. That’s a total that has been reached 24 other times in league history — 10 by Michael Jordan, five by Wilt Chamberlain and once by nine other players. Gilgeous-Alexander would be the 12th to reach the milestone.

Panthers-Oilers Stanley Cup Final is as tight as can be. Game 3 could tilt the series

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — The second consecutive Stanley Cup Final between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers has been about as even as a series can get through two games, with each winning one in overtime. The Panthers have led for more time, the Oilers have gotten more shots on net and a bounce or two here or there could have changed the complexion of where these teams are at. That’s still the case going into Game 3 on Monday night with the chance that small adjustments could tilt the series one way or the other.

Denny Hamlin wins at Michigan for his 3rd NASCAR Cup Series victory of the season

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — Denny Hamlin outlasted the competition at Michigan, winning his third NASCAR Cup Series race this season and the 57th of his career. Hamlin went low to pass William Byron on the 197th of 200 laps and pulled away from the pack in the No. 11 Toyota. The 44-year-old was prepared to leave to join his fiancée, Jordan Fish, who is due to give birth to their third child, a boy. Hamlin said he would skip next week’s race in Mexico City if necessary to witness the birth. Chris Buescher finished second, followed by Ty Gibbs, Bubba Wallace and Kyle Larson.

US Open gets a soggy start to the week at Oakmont, with Jordan Spieth among early arrivals

OAKMONT, Pa. (AP) — U.S. Open week is off to a soggy start at Oakmont. Players are starting to arrive equipped with umbrellas and expectations of a typical tough test. Jordan Spieth was among the early arrivals. He played the front nine on Saturday and got in 11 holes on Sunday. The rough is every bit as deep and thick as advertised. Spieth says it’s one of the few U.S. Open courses that doesn’t need a lot of work to be ready for a major. He says mistakes are bound to happen. The key to Oakmont is not to compound the mistakes.

South Florida pro sports teams are inspired by the success of the Florida Panthers

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — The Panthers are in the Stanley Cup Final for the third straight year. They’re three wins away from defending their 2024 title. The Panthers went from winning just 25 playoff games in their first 28 seasons combined to winning more than 40 — and counting — in the past three seasons. And their general manager, Bill Zito, has been in conversations for GM of the Year for several seasons after building title-contending rosters year after year. They’re the pinnacle of success in South Florida, and other pro sports teams in the region have taken notice.

Athletes express concern over NCAA settlement’s impact on non-revenue sports

The $2.8 billion NCAA settlement is being touted as a path to stability for college sports, clearing the way for schools to pay their athletes within certain parameters. Football and basketball players are expected to be the highest-paid athletes on campus. Most projections estimate 75% of revenue sharing will go toward football. It begs the question: What happens to the non-revenue-generating sports?

Manny Pacquiao’s fighting days aren’t finished yet, as he’s coming out of retirement at 46 for a shot at another title next month. No matter what happens in the remaining stage, it’s hard to find many better resumes than the one he already assembled in a career that landed him in the International Boxing Hall of Fame on Sunday. Pacquiao was the headline name in the class of 2025 that was enshrined during a ceremony at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York. The eight-division champion will then return to training for his July 19 bout in Las Vegas against WBC champ Mario Barrios.

Cristiano Ronaldo had kept Portugal in the game when he equalized in the 61st minute of regular time with his record-extending 138th international goal after Mikel Oyarzabal had given Spain a 2-1 halftime lead. Kylian Mbappé led France to third place earlier Sunday with a 2-0 win over host nation Germany in Stuttgart.
