As the old saying goes, the best way to eat an elephant is one bit at a time. As it turns out, a similar philosophy helps in moving the contents of a bookstore.
No, nobody was eating books. But, as The Associated Press reports, a group of about 300 people transported over 9,000 books from Serendipity Books in Chelsea, Michigan, one at a time until each and every one had reached the new location it was moving into.
The volunteers were divided into two lines on the sidewalk, with each one passing an individual book to the person standing next to them until the job was complete about two hours later.
“It was a practical way to move the books, but it also was a way for everybody to have a part,” says shop owner Michelle Tuplin. “As people passed the books along, they said ‘I have not read this’ and ‘that’s a good one.'”
Perhaps one of the books suggested other elephant-eating strategies.
