Wasco County Sheriff’s Office Enhances Radio Communications through Strategic Partnership

THE DALLES, OR –February 27, 2025 – The Wasco County Sheriff’s Office has significantly improved its
radio communications system through a strategic partnership with the Oregon Department of
Transportation (ODOT) and the Oregon State Police (OSP).

Beginning in 2022, the Sheriff’s Office undertook a comprehensive assessment of its existing radio
communications infrastructure and operability. The assessment revealed critical coverage gaps, aging
infrastructure, and technological deficiencies that posed safety risks to deputies and hindered operational
effectiveness.

Faced with the prohibitive cost of developing a completely new system, estimated at $5 million for
infrastructure and $400,000 annually for operation, the Sheriff’s Office explored alternative solutions. In
late 2023, a partnership with ODOT and OSP was established, leveraging their existing, state-of-the-art
communications infrastructure.

This collaboration significantly upgraded the Sheriff’s Office radio communications capabilities. By
integrating with the existing ODOT/OSP system, the Sheriff’s Office invested approximately $400,000 in
infrastructure, including grant funding, a substantial reduction from the initial $5 million estimate.
“This partnership is a game-changer for our agency,” stated Sheriff Lane Magill, “The enhanced radio
coverage significantly improves deputy safety and allows for faster response times, ultimately enhancing
the level of service we provide to the residents and visitors of Wasco County.”

The upgraded communications system ensures that Wasco County Sheriff’s deputies have reliable and
consistent radio coverage throughout the county, addressing critical safety concerns and improving
overall operational efficiency.
