Valentine’s Day season can be a rough time of year for some people, and also for one opossum.
Perhaps that’s why this particular nocturnal marsupial sneaked into a house in Omaha, Nebraska, whereupon it was found collapsed on a couch after eating an entire Costco chocolate cake.
According to CNN, home owner Kim Doggett found the opossum lying on her furniture and panting while surrounded by brown paw prints dotting the cushions.
After an unsuccessful attempt at shooing the visitor back outside, Doggett decided to called the American Humane Society. Upon being successfully extracted from the home, the opossum was transferred to the Nebraska Wildlife Rehab, where it was discovered that it was suffering from lead toxicity, in addition to being a full-blown chocoholic.
“It appears that she was lucky to have been caught red-handed, because it allowed her to come to our hospital and get diagnosed with what can become a fatal condition in wildlife,” says Nebraska Wildlife Rehab Executive Director Laura Stastny.
The opossum will stay under the rehab’s care before likely being released back into the wild in the spring. Hopefully by then all of the Valentine’s Day decorations will be gone.
