Sen. Keith Wagoner critical of Democrats for weakening emergency powers reform

Wagoner: ‘Their substitute amendment made the bill weaker than current law; I don’t understand what their game is.’

OLYMPIA… Today, Sen. Keith Wagoner, R-Sedro-Woolley and the sponsor of Senate Bill 5434 – the measure that would reform the governor’s emergency powers, voiced his disappointment at Senate Democrats’ amendment weakening his legislation. Wagoner urged citizens to contact their lawmakers and demand real accountability.

“The bill, as amended by Senate Democrats, is now weaker than current law,” said Wagoner. “It allows emergency declarations to continue on indefinitely. I don’t understand why Legislative Democrats want to hide behind this instead of representing the people of their districts. I will continue to work with Gov. Ferguson if the bill can be salvaged, but I cannot support it going forward in its current form.”
