How many dice are used in a standard game of backgammon by each player?

Each player uses two standard six-sided dice during their turn in a standard game of backgammon.
  • Turn rolls: On each regular turn, a player rolls a pair (two) of dice to determine how far to move their checkers.

  • Doubles: If a player rolls matching numbers (doubles), they play that number four times instead of two.

  • Initial roll: To decide who goes first, each player rolls a single die.

  • Set contents: A complete backgammon set typically includes four dice total (two per player) so each person has their own pair, alongside a separate doubling cube.
