Valley of the dolls: Shrinking Japanese village fights loneliness with puppets

The town of Ichinono, Japan, is a peaceful little hamlet — maybe a bit too peaceful.

With most of its younger population seeking greener pastures in other parts of the country, the town of just 60 people, most past retirement age, has taken to stitching together puppets out of old clothes, fabrics and mannequins and displaying them around town to keep them company.

The faux residents can be seen engaging in a variety of everyday activities, such as “ride swings, others push firewood carts, smiling eerily at visitors,” according to NBC News.

“We’re probably outnumbered by puppets,” Hisayo Yamazaki, an 88-year-old widow, told the Agence France-Presse news agency, according to the outlet.
