Can’t sleep? Some say a sweatshirt around your head is the ticket to dreamland

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says 1 in 3 Americans are sleep-deprived, so it’s no wonder most people are looking for tips on how to catch some Zs.

A recent viral video on TikTok says the ultimate hack is as close as your closet: a sweatshirt. TikTok user Callie Galey‘s post, in which she boasts about having “the best sleep of my life,” offers her prescription: wrapping a sweatshirt around your head and eyes, with the sleeves around your chin.

The final result might have you looking like an Afghan shepherd, but she swears by it — and has more than 2.4 million likes to show she may be onto something.

Bustle looked into the trend and asked board-certified physician Dr. Jessica Andrade about it. She says swaddling, like we do for babies or nervous puppies, works on grown-ups, too.

“Additionally, the slight pressure exerted by the sweatshirt could create a cocoon-like effect, similar to a weighted blanket, which has been shown to promote relaxation and improve sleep quality for some people,” she says.

Dr. Shelby Harris, another sleep expert consulted by the publication, offers: “Just keep a few things in mind: make sure it’s not too tight, doesn’t make you too hot, and doesn’t mess with your breathing.”

In particular, make sure you don’t cover your mouth and nose, lest you want your sleep to be permanent.
