Halloween spending expected to hit record $12.2 billion

If you’re in the mood for Halloween this year, you’re not alone. A National Retail Foundation (NRF) survey says Americans are set to spend a record of $12.2 billion on the holiday in 2023.

That easily tops the $10.6 billion we spent last year and works out to be around $108.24 per person in 2023, according to the annual survey conducted by Prosper Insights & Analytics on behalf of the NRF.

The survey shows 73% of those polled say they’re participating in the holiday this season, a record and up from 69% in 2022.

Sixty-eight percent of respondents planned to hand out candy, according to the poll, and 53% will be decorating their home/yard. Half of those polled say they’re dressing up.

Thirty-two percent say they’re planning to either attend a party or throw one themselves, and 28% say they’re taking their kids trick-or-treating.

Nearly 70% of those polled will be buying costumes this year — another record, with total spending on costumes expected to reach a record $4.1 billion. In 2022, it was $3.6 billion.

Candy spending is expected to reach $3.6 billion, up from $3.1 billion last year, according to the survey.
