Sleep survey shows 60% of Americans watch TV before bed — but what are we watching?

This might not be a surprise to you, but although it’s not recommended by sleep experts, most Americans watch TV before bed.

According to a survey of more than 2,000 people that was commissioned by Best Mattress Brand, 60% of respondents say they watch TV as part of their bedtime routine, with half saying they do it nearly every day of the week.

The survey shows that 50.9% of Americans watch between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m., with 42% switching off between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m.

The survey also noted what we’re watching, and it seems we’re looking for a laugh before we meet the sandman: Family Guy was the most commonly watched show before bed, the poll noted, with another animated Seth MacFarlane show, American Dad, coming in second place.

Third place was earned by another cartoon comedy, Bob’s Burgers, while Saturday Night Live placed fourth.

Rounding out the fifth place was football, but another animated show, The Simpsons, was close behind that.

All that said, the website noted people who said they don’t watch TV before bed reported getting 10 extra minutes’ worth of Zzzs and an overall “higher sleep quality” than those who do.
