The Dalles City Council met last night. Items on the agenda included a public hearing on changing the zoning of a 4.23 acre parcel next to the Celilo Inn to allow commercial development. The planning commission had recommended the change, and there were no negative comments on the proposal from the public, so the council unanimously approved the change.
Councilors also approved the purchase of a new Cat excavator, and voted in favor of annexing several properties that have already agreed to the annexation.
Under public comment, the council heard from Granada Theater owner Chuck Gomez, who promoted his rock festival this weekend at Lewis & Clark Festival Park. Bands include guitar virtuoso Sugar Larson, the Stevie Ray Vaughn of the Northwest, The Bobby Torres Ensemble latin jazz band, Roger Fisher, the lead guitar player for Heart and his band Born to Fly, and headliners the Marshall Tucker Band, one of the pioneers of the southern rock sound.
Gomez also said people from several states had already purchased tickets for the event, and added:
“Tourism is the key, to not just this community, but literally to every community in America. It’s better to use other people’s money to grow our town than our tax dollars.”
