Whatever you do, “Do not let moose lick your car”

We’ve all got some habits — some weirder than others — but when it comes to the moose in Canada, they’ve got a habit so weird that they’ve had to warn drivers: “Do not let moose lick your car.”

As seen in photos shared to social media, a sign on the side of the road in Alberta flashes with the message as a way to warn drivers. Apparently, the moose are fans of the road salt that can splash onto vehicles in the winter, but while the act seems innocent enough it can actually turn into a dangerous one.

Jasper National Park spokesman Steve Young told local newspaper Fitzhugh that the animal’s habit could lead to more of them standing in the road to get a lick, which can become a hazard to both the moose and those in the vehicle.

“(This) started as an occasional issue a few years ago and now is too common,” he said in an email.

So there you have it. No matter how tempting it may be to marvel at a moose as it makes a snack out of your vehicle, it’s best to keep things moving and marvel from afar.
