On this day in 1962, John Glenn became the first American to orbit Earth—circling the planet three times in just under five hours aboard Friendship 7. The flight was risky, but Glenn's calm focus and NASA's teamwork brought him safely home.

Aperture is one of the three sides of the Exposure Triangle, along with shutter speed and ISO. It is the interaction of all three that determines the exposure of an image. Aperture controls the amount of light entering through the lens. Shutter speed dictates the duration of light hitting the sensor.
