The geographic divide between free and slave states in the U.S. was primarily defined by two borders: the Mason-Dixon Line and the Ohio River. Further west, this symbolic and political boundary was continued by the Missouri Compromise Line (parallel). 

The capital of Virginia is Richmond. It serves as the seat of state government and is home to the Virginia General Assembly, the oldest continuously operating legislative body in the Western Hemisphere.
