Freezing rain and snow snarl travel in Pacific Northwest

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Heavy snow, freezing rain and sleet have severely disrupted travel across the Pacific Northwest. In Oregon, police said that one person died in an accident on Interstate 84 in the Columbia River Gorge on Tuesday morning. Crashes caused by ice shut down nearly 50 miles of the highway’s eastbound lanes through the Gorge earlier in the day. Transportation officials said those lanes have since reopened. In Washington state, mountain passes on parts of Interstate 90 and U.S. Highway 2 have been closed in both directions due to spinouts and accidents. Across the border in Vancouver, Canada, authorities at the city’s airport said there has been an “unprecedented” number of canceled flights.
