‘Devastating’: Mass shootings obscure daily U.S. gun toll

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Four high-profile shootings in U.S. cities this week drew headlines but masked the daily toll of gun violence in some of the same communities. As shooting rampages unfolded in Oregon, Phoenix, Detroit and Houston, a rash of smaller-scale gun violence went unnoticed except by victims. In Portland, police busy with three murders and nine non-fatal shootings in 48 hours couldn’t control illegal street races that attracted hundreds. In Phoenix, there were 17 shootings and 11 homicides in what the police chief called the worst violence in 33 years. Police are on edge heading into Labor Day weekend as summer ends.
