Butt-dials are embarrassing and seem to happen at the most inopportune time — as was the case with this criminal who butt-dialed police as he was stealing a car.
News Tribune reports a criminal’s harebrained mistake led to the arrest of four criminals. Cole County, Missouri, Sheriff John Wheeler said police responded to a scene after a man called 911 — and promptly hung up — around 4 a.m. When authorities arrived at the home, the owner — who had not called police — realized his car was missing.
Another resident told police their car had been rifled through and thieves stole a few things that night. As they filed the police report, the resident learned his credit card was being used at a nearby convenience store.
With a hot lead on their hands, police reviewed the store’s security footage and found the man they were looking for — someone they apparently know pretty well.
Authorities tracked the man down to his home and found it to be filled with stolen goods. In all, police slapped handcuffs on two women, ages 33 and 35, and two men, ages 32 and 35. They were charged with felony stealing, theft of a motor vehicle, fraud and more.
Said Wheeler of another job well done, “We appreciate the suspects calling 911 and allowing us to solve this crime in a timely manner.”
