COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Xavier Arreaga and Will Bruin scored late goals about a minute apart to help the Seattle Sounders beat the defending champion Columbus Crew 2-1 on Saturday. Arreaga redirected a shot by Raúl Ruidíaz that trickled over the line in the 88th minute, and Bruin ripped a right-footer past the outstretched hand of goalkeeper Eloy Room in the 89th. Western Conference-leading Seattle has won three games in a row and is unbeaten in four. Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his first goal of the season for Columbus in the 77th. Columbus has lost six games in row, its longest skid in more than two decades and the longest losing streak by a defending champ in MLS history. The Crew beat Seattle 3-0 in the 2020 MLS Cup final.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Cecilio Domínguez converted a penalty kick in the 11th minute, Diego Fagundez added a goal and an assist and Austin FC beat the Portland Timbers 3-1. Sebastian Druissi, who signed with Austin on July 29, scored his first MLS goal. Dairon Asprilla scored his career-high fifth goal of the season for Portland to cap the scoring in the 55th minute.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Morgan Weaver came off the bench and scored in the 87th minute to give the Portland Thorns a 1-0 victory over Lyon in the Women’s International Champions Cup final Saturday night. Barcelona downed the Houston Dash 3-2 in the third-place match earlier Saturday at Portland’s Providence Park. Weaver, who entered the game in the 82nd, broke through with her shot from a tough angle against Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler. After the goal, the crowd chanted Weaver’s name.
