WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) released the following statement after President Biden signed the bill designating Juneteenth as a federal holiday into law:
“Today, we have finally recognized Juneteenth as a federal holiday. This day is an opportunity for Americans to reflect on the history of slavery and its impact on the United States. This is an important step, and we must continue to fight for racial justice.”
Senator Cantwell was an original cosponsor of the legislation, which had 60 bipartisan cosponsors and passed the Senate unanimously on Tuesday.
