Rep. Mosbrucker hosts Flag Day community discussion: ‘Honoring Our Veterans Year Round’

“Honoring Our Veterans Year Round” is the theme of a community discussion at the Goldendale American Legion, hosted by Rep. Gina Mosbrucker on Flag Day, Monday evening, June 14.

“We spend Memorial Day and Veterans Day remembering and honoring our veterans who have served and sacrificed for our country so we can be free. However, I think it is important that we look for other ways to show our gratitude — and not limit it to two days a year,” said Mosbrucker, R-Goldendale.

The roundtable conversation will focus on ways to honor active, non-active and retired veterans, as well as those who have passed and/or paid the ultimate sacrifice in service of their country.

“According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are more than 520,000 military veterans in Washington, which is nearly 9% of the state’s population. As many as 5.8% live in poverty and nearly 1,600 veterans in our state are homeless,” said Mosbrucker, sponsor of legislation that created Washington’s YesVets program, a statewide campaign to hire veterans.

“President George Washington once said, ‘The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation.’ These men and women deserve not only our thanks and our respect, but our help when they need it,” added Mosbrucker. “It’s my hope we can use this community forum to draw out ideas that will not only honor, but serve our veterans, as they have served us.”

The roundtable discussion begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Goldendale American Legion, 108 N. Grant, Goldendale.
