Goldendale City Council met tonight last night. Council members heard from Kay Garner-Schmidt, who reported a lack of handicapped parking spaces downtown which met with positive response from the council. Councilors also approved a resolution and ordinance financing purchase of a vac truck and a street sweeper $760,000 over a 10 year period with the state treasury department. In response to a question from council about whether it would be possible to jointly fund the purchase with another community and share the the use of the equipment, City Administrator Larry Bellamy noted:
“The problem with sharing with somebody is that you both want to do it at the same time. Leaves only fall certain times of the year and the red rock needs to be picked up certain times of the year as well.”
The big item on the agenda was a request from RRR Development, LLC for a variance to reduce the street width for several lots in a new subdivision. After a long discussion, the council voted to amend the zoning ordinance, but not as much as the developers requested. The subdivision would create 19 lots, all of which could be filled with duplexes. The planning commission passed on a recommendation that duplexes would only be allowed on six of the lots, the rest would have single residences. Most of the concern was about parking, and the council adopted that suggestion, though there was a single no vote by councilor Andy Halm, who was concerned about access for fire equipment and other emergency vehicles.
