Back in December, a 200-foot-wide wildlife bridge — the largest in North America — opened over Interstate 25 in Colorado with the goal of keeping both animals and drivers safe. Some numbers have come in, and it seems the bridge is working in a big way. Collisions involving animals have dropped by a whopping 91%.
Cameras have already caught whole herds of elk, pronghorn, bears, deer, and coyotes trotting safely across the bridge. Wildlife officials have also reported smaller critters like frogs and mice enjoying safe travels on special log paths that are designed to protect them from predators.
Those involved with the project are still working to make the bridge even more inviting by adding vegetation — which could improve the safety numbers even further in the months and years to come.
