Ogwumike becomes 4th player in WNBA history with 8,000 points as the Sparks beat the Fire 105-84
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Nneka Ogwumike had 20 points, 12 rebounds and five assists to help the Los Angeles Sparks beat the Portland Fire 105-84 on Sunday night. Ogwumike became the fourth player in WNBA history to reach 8,000 points, joining Diana Taurasi (10,646), Tina Charles (8,396) and DeWanna Bonner (8,217). The 2016 WNBA MVP has 8,013 points and her 18 double-doubles are the most she’s had in a season. Los Angeles native Lisa Leslie was honored with the unveiling of her statue outside Crypto.com Arena and a halftime ceremony. Leslie, a three-time WNBA MVP, played for the Sparks from 1999-2007.
Mahomes and Walker shine, Butker hits winning 40-yarder as Chiefs beat Colts 33-30 in OT
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Harrison Butker kicked a pair of field goals in overtime, including a 40-yarder as time expired, giving the Kansas City Chiefs a 33-30 victory over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night. Patrick Mahomes threw for 382 yards and three touchdowns, Kenneth Walker III ran for 117 yards, and Travis Kelce had nine catches for 101 yards and a score for the Chiefs. The game was tied 27-all after regulation and then Butker and the Colts’ Spencer Shrader traded field goals in overtime. Kansas City had one last chance with the ball, moved swiftly down the field, and gave Butker a chance to help the Chiefs improve to 2-0 on the season.
Ole Miss up to No. 4 in AP Top 25 with win over LSU, Tigers slip to No. 10, SEC has 10 teams ranked
Mississippi has moved into the top five of the AP Top 25 college football poll with its win over LSU. The Tigers remain in the top 10, and Florida and Mississippi State joined the rankings, giving the SEC 10 teams in the latest poll. The Rebels jumped to No. 4 after defeating LSU 32-24. LSU slipped to No. 10. Texas holds the top spot for the second week, followed by Georgia, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, and Indiana. Louisville made the biggest gain, rising to No. 16. Texas A&M fell to No. 23 after losing to Kentucky.
Commanders QB Jayden Daniels dislocates his left elbow for the second time in less than a year
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jayden Daniels has dislocated his left elbow again. He was hurt Sunday, less than a year after the previous injury that sidelined the Washington Commanders quarterback most of the second half of last season. Coach Dan Quinn said imaging showed the dislocation but no fracture for Daniels, who was taken off the field on a cart at the end of the first half of Commanders’ 37-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Daniels dislocated the elbow in a blowout loss to Seattle last season. That injury occurred when Daniels used his non-throwing arm while trying to brace himself, and the same thing happened against the Cowboys.
Bears quarterback Caleb Williams carted off with a right hamstring injury
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams left the team’s 9-3 loss to Minnesota in the fourth quarter with a right hamstring injury. Williams got hurt while scrambling toward the sideline deep in Vikings territory with about 7 1/2 minutes left. The 24-year-old Williams was helped off the field. Williams was 15 for 26 for 138 yards with an interception. The No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft also had five carries for 42 yards in rainy conditions at Soldier Field. Tyson Bagent replaced Williams, and the drive ended when Cairo Santos’ 23-yard field goal was blocked by Isaiah Rodgers — preserving Minnesota’s 6-3 lead.
Cubs 3B Alex Bregman sent to hospital for tests after being hit in face by foul ball while on deck
CINCINNATI (AP) — Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman left Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds after being struck in the face by a foul ball while standing near the on-deck circle. Bregman was taken to a hospital for X-rays and CT scans. There was no decision yet on whether he would travel with the team back to Chicago following its 9-1 win. In the fourth inning, Michael Busch checked his swing and fouled off a pitch from Reds right-hander Luis Mey that struck Bregman. He immediately jogged toward the Cubs dugout with his hand over his left eye. Bregman was escorted by training staff into the clubhouse.
Olivia Miles breaks Caitlin Clark’s WNBA rookie points record in Lynx win over Sun
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) — Olivia Miles broke Caitlin Clark’s WNBA record for points by a rookie in a season on Sunday in the Minnesota Lynx’s 101-89 victory over the Connecticut Sun. Miles was tied with Clark with 769 points coming into the game and moved atop the list by hitting a free throw in the second quarter. She now has 480 points. The Lynx rookie came into the game averaging 19.7 points, 6.0 assists and 4.7 rebounds and was a big reason the team had the best record in the WNBA. Miles and Clark both accomplished their feats in 40 games.
49ers score TDs on 1st 5 drives to beat the Dolphins 35-13
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Christian McCaffrey became the fourth-fastest player in the Super Bowl era with 100 career touchdowns, Brock Purdy played a near-perfect game and the San Francisco 49ers overwhelmed the Miami Dolphins 35-13. The 49ers showed no signs of fatigue after beating the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 in the opener in Australia and began the season with back-to-back wins of at least 20 points for the first time in franchise history. They scored touchdowns on their first five drives of the game. Miami was dominated after spending the week by practicing in nearby Napa after losing the opener in Las Vegas.
Prescott throws 4 TD passes as Cowboys beat Commanders, who again lose Daniels to dislocated elbow
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Dak Prescott threw four touchdown passes to break Tony Romo’s career franchise record, and the Dallas Cowboys beat Washington 37-20 after the Commanders’ Jayden Daniels went down with another gruesome-looking dislocated left elbow. Prescott’s record-breaking 249th TD pass was his second TD of the game to CeeDee Lamb, who had 153 yards receiving. Tight end Jake Ferguson had the other two scoring catches. Daniels was hurt after left guard Chris Paul stepped on his foot as he backed away from center and Daniels used his left arm to brace himself. Daniels also dislocated his elbow last November against Seattle.
Tyler Shough and the Saints produce two big drives at the end to topple the Ravens 24-17
BALTIMORE (AP) — Tyler Shough scored on a fourth-down sneak with 1:28 remaining, and the New Orleans Saints rallied to a 24-17 win over the Baltimore Ravens. New Orleans had first down from the 2 before a penalty and a costly incomplete pass. On fourth-and-goal, the Saints decided against a short field goal, and Shough was ruled to have scored on a 1-yard sneak. The play was upheld after a review. The Ravens, who didn’t have a first down on either of their previous two drives, made it to the New Orleans 37, but Lamar Jackson’s deep pass was intercepted by Julian Blackmon with 13 seconds left.
J.J. Spaun wins Europe’s flagship event after being left off US Presidents Cup team
VIRGINIA WATER, England (AP) — J.J. Spaun was disappointed not to be picked for the U.S. Presidents Cup team. He responded by winning Europe’s flagship event in his debut at Wentworth. Spaun made four birdies on his last five holes for a 67. That turned into a two-shot victory when Manuel Elvira chopped up the 18th hole for a double bogey when a par would have forced a playoff. Elvira wound up in a four-way tie for second with Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and PGA champion Aaron Rai. Spaun says he played with a chip on his shoulder wanting to prove he should’ve been picked.
