A doctor in Virginia got a batty wake-up call recently.
Dr. Krista Edelman, a gastroenterologist in Richmond, shared in an Instagram post last week that she woke up to a bat trying to get into her mouth.
“This morning, I was asleep, and I had a dream that there was a little mouse trying to get into my mouth,” she recounted. “I’m half-asleep. I reached up to my mouth, again, still thinking this is a dream, and then I touched something that is kind of slimy, and a little hairy and cool, and I immediately somehow knew it was a bat.”
She said the bat was “legitimately trying to burrow between my lips into my mouth,” and once she realized what was happening, she grabbed the animal and threw it across the room.
As a doctor, Edelman knew to catch the bat and have it tested for rabies. She also went to her local ER and proactively got the rabies vaccine. Thankfully, the bat tested negative, but it might be a while before Edelman sleeps easy.
