While there were famously 76 trombones in the big parade, it’ll take a lot more than that to break a world record.
The city of Ipswich, Australia, believes it did just that by gathering more than 600 trombone players at a recent arts festival in an effort to set the Guinness record for largest trombone ensemble.
The current record, which was set in 2012 in Washington, D.C., is 368 people.
According to a press release from the city, Ipswich’s attempt, which fittingly featured a performance of “Seventy-Six Trombones,” has been submitted to Guinness for official verification.
“This record attempt was about much more than numbers,” says Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding. “It was about showcasing the power of music in a city that embraces culture, supports local talent and delivers unique experiences to bring people together.”
Harold Hill would certainly be proud.
