Here’s a pearl of wisdom from 80-year-old Jimmy Rush and his 99-year-old father, James Rush: if a restaurant promotion seems like a joke, you won’t know for sure until you try it.
Wintzell’s Oyster House in Mobile, Alabama, has long displayed a sign behind its bar promising free oysters to any 80-year-old man who visits the restaurant with his father.
So, on his 80th birthday, Jimmy took his father to Wintzell’s and dared them to put their oysters where their mouth is. And they did.
“Most people read that sign behind the bar and laugh,” Wintzell’s writes in a Facebook post. “But tonight, Jimmy Rush walked in on his 80th birthday with his father, James Rush, 99, right beside him, and turned one of Wintzell’s rarest traditions into a real-life milestone.”
“The Rush family has been part of this place for years, and they didn’t come alone,” the post continues. “A full room of friends, shared memories — and yes, oysters on the house, true to our founder’s promise. Some jokes age well. So did this one.”
For those of us who aren’t as lucky to hit 80 while our father is still alive, one commenter asked, “Do ashes in an urn count?”
