Plumb helpful: Japanese city receives millions in gold bars to fix water pipes

If you want to buy the Water Works in Monopoly, that will cost you $150 in colorful bills. To fix the water works in their city, one anonymous benefactor decided to donate a whole lot more money in one very shiny color.

The Associated Press reports that the Japanese city of Osaka received about $3.6 million in gold bars from an unidentified person, asking that it be used to fix the water pipes in the area.

“It’s a staggering amount and I was speechless,” says Mayor Hideyuki Yokoyama. “Tackling aging water pipes requires a huge investment, and I cannot thank [them] enough for the donation.”

While we don’t know who made the donation, there is someone with roots in Japan that definitely has an interest in plumbing and collecting gold coins. Mario, is that you?
