Marsupial mix-up: Loose wallaby in Colorado mistaken for kangaroo

If you see a pouched animal hopping around, we wouldn’t blame you if you assumed it was a kangaroo.

Colorado’s Douglas County Sheriff’s Office received a report that a kangaroo was on the loose in a local neighborhood. Upon further investigation, deputies discovered that the escaped animal was a wallaby, a smaller cousin of the kangaroo.

“Turns out the suspect was Charlie the Wallaby, who is very much a real wallaby and very well known (yes, he has his own Instagram),” the office writes in an Instagram post. “Everyone was safe, Charlie made his way home, and the story immediately became one for the books.”

Regardless of whether Charlie was a wallaby or a kangaroo, it’s sounds like deputies were quick to hop to the scene.

“I’m not going to lie, this is going to be the highlight of my year,” a sergeant says.
