Washington, D.C. — Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today issued the following statement on a report that the Trump administration is considering wasting billions of taxpayer dollars issuing payments of up to $100,000 to every resident of Greenland to buy their support for Trump’s harebrained scheme to take over the island:
“In America, there are 11 million children living in poverty and countless others who feel there is no hope they’ll ever get ahead, and it’s an insult to every last one of them that Donald Trump would consider wasting our taxpayer dollars cutting checks to bribe the residents of Greenland. Our government is led by the vanity and impulses of a man who clearly cares more about a snow-covered trophy in the north Atlantic than he does about the needs of the people he’s supposed to serve. Even setting the obvious corruption and wastefulness aside, this is Trump’s dumbest idea since the time he stared directly into a solar eclipse.”
