Americans fear running out of butter during the holidays

A lot goes into making a perfect holiday meal, and it turns out for most people that meal can’t possibly be perfect without one special ingredient: butter.

That’s right, according to a new Talker Research poll on behalf of food distribution company SpartanNash, 63% of Americans say their holiday feast would be doomed if for some reason they ran out of butter. Another 72% said butter is their favorite ingredient, while 61% of people can’t live without it.

The poll of 2,000 Americans was released to coincide with National Butter Day on Monday, and it turns out folks need a lot of butter for their holiday cooking. In fact, the average household goes through five sticks of butter for their baking and cooking needs during the winter holidays, three more sticks than they use for cooking during an average non-holiday week.

So, what is everyone using butter for during the holidays? Not surprising, mashed potatoes is the top dish (79%), followed by dinner rolls (76%), corn (72%), corn bread (62%) and sweet potatoes (52%).
