Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced that today a Multnomah County Circuit Court judge sentenced Steven Knox, 55, to 70 months in the Department of Corrections related to a stabbing that occurred in March of 2023.
Case Facts
On March 14, 2023, a victim reported having been stabbed from behind multiple times outside of her apartment complex in the Buckman neighborhood. Video of the incident showed the victim briefly interacting with an individual positively identified as Steven Knox before walking away. The video then showed Knox with an object in his hand chasing, grabbing, and making repeated stabbing motions at the victim. The victim reported knowing Knox for a few years prior to the incident, and Portland Police Bureau’s investigation indicated that it was likely motivated by money owed.
Knox was sentenced to life in prison for a 1987 murder before being paroled in 2009. His parole was revoked in 2011 after various violations, including a number of domestic violence incidents. At the time of this incident, Knox was on supervision following his parole being granted over the state’s objections in 2019.
Plea and Sentencing
Deputy District Attorney Mihnea Moga handled prosecution for the state. On August 21, 2024, a jury found Knox not guilty on the Attempted Murder I charge, but guilty of Assault II and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. At a sentencing hearing on August 27, 2024, Judge Leslie Bottomly sentenced Knox to 70 months in prison, as well as 3 years of post-prison supervision. He will be transferred into the custody of the Oregon Department of Corrections to serve his sentence.
