Update on the Downtown Tree Project in The Dalles

The Dalles, Oregon – June 20, 2024 – The City of The Dalles is pleased to provide an update on the downtown tree project, a significant initiative aimed at enhancing the beauty and environmental health of our downtown area. Under a contract agreement with The Davey Tree Expert Company (Davey), the City has been diligently monitoring and supporting the newly planted trees to ensure their successful establishment and growth. Despite some initial challenges, proactive steps are being taken to address any issues and ensure the long-term health of our downtown trees.

City staff and Davey have been closely tracking the health and progress of the trees, recognizing that many are struggling to adapt to their new environment. In response, Davey have adjusted their maintenance plans, increasing watering and feeding efforts at no additional cost to the City. “We understand the community’s concerns regarding the struggling trees,” stated Joshua Chandler, Community Development Director. “We are committed to working closely with Davey to improve care practices and guarantee the health of all trees. Any trees that do not regain their health will be replaced this fall, also at no extra cost to the City.” Additionally, all trees are guaranteed for three years from the time of successful planting.

The City of The Dalles remains dedicated to the success of the downtown tree project and appreciates the community’s patience and understanding during this period of adjustment. The community can help by ensuring the tree wells remain clear of litter and by properly disposing of cigarette butts, which can be harmful to the trees’ health.
